Karen Jonas
Pearl Street Warehouse, Washington, DC - February 4, 2022
I went three weeks without a show prior to this one because I caught a mild case of Covid. For most that’s not a big piece of time between shows, but I really missed them. Karen and her band, Tim, Seth, and Seth, are always great to see live, so I make sure I see them every chance I get (I don’t get how they aren’t just huge at this point). More than that though this show and the time off between shows got me thinking of what has been my live music base over the last two years, local bands. Especially in 2020, larger national acts stayed off the road and the only game in town was local bands and small touring bands, both at smaller venues. For me this has been great because it has given me time to better learn how to shoot a show, and more importantly it has shown me how great the DC area local music scene really is. Karen Jonas is an act I would recommend to everyone. As well the DC area is stocked with bands/artists like Cathy DiToro (solo and in all of the bands she’s in), Calista Garcia, Brassie, Dad Legs (currently looking for a new name, so this may not be their name for long), Red Medicine, The Whiskey Kids, all the other Bad Newz Bands I failed to list, Cat Janice, Outerloop (really any band with Taisha Estrada), Lightmare, Grady, Hollertown, Jasmine Gillison, Rachel Levitin, Smooth AF, Annie Stokes, and Bluewreck. And since Karen Jonas is really based out of Fredericksburg, VA let me throw in Railgun, and The Last Real Circus both out of Richmond, VA. I think sometime in the early 21st century I lost touch with the local scene and it’s good to find out it is still around and still really strong. Check them out at the area’s great small venues.
